Get Involved
Currently, admission to the Health Psychology Lab (GEPPS) is associated with Professor Andre Faro’s guidance at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. In other words, only individuals approved in undergraduate research programs, master’s and doctoral, and postdoctoral internships selection processes enter the group. Therefore, it is important to pay attention to the public notices for each modality, which are offered annually at the Federal University of Sergipe.
For personal organization purposes, it is recommended that anyone interested in such positions contact the professor (via email) at least six months in advance of the regular vacancy announcement period to schedule a meeting and express their interest. In the month immediately prior to the vacancy announcement, it is not possible to schedule meetings.
All mentees are automatically affiliated with GEPPS. This implies participation in other activities carried out by the group, such as weekly meetings, specific material development, involvement in outreach initiatives, partnerships, text production, and more. It is expected, therefore, that the interest in being mentored is linked to joining the group and all elements inherent to its operation.
The expected profile of a GEPPS member is a proactive student with a broad interest in Health Psychology training (its theme and associated subjects), an openness to learning quantitative methods, cognitive-theory-based guidance, and, above all, the ability to focus on contributing to the field, fellow members, and GEPPS’ goals.
Post Doctoral Internship
Postdoctoral admission can happen in two ways. Through a public notice or individual acceptance.
The first one refers to the availability of postdoctoral positions offered by the Psychology Graduate Program at the Federal University of Sergipe (PPGPSI/UFS) or research projects related to it. In this case, admission to the postdoctoral program depends on the criteria established in the calling. The existence of the scholarship is defined in its own public notice.
Through individual acceptance, the candidate is advised to contact Professor Andre Faro at least six months prior to the formal submission of their request for affiliation with the Psychology Graduate Program at the Federal University of Sergipe (PPGPSI/UFS) for the postdoctoral studies. This gap is established to allow for the adjustment of research details and how the affiliation with GEPPS will happen. In this modality, there are no, a priori, scholarships linked to the postdoctoral studies.
The postdoctoral theme should involve theoretical or empirical research in the field of Health Psychology, within one of Professor Andre Faro’s research lines. Furthermore, an interface with the candidate’s expertise may be evident, showing how the interaction to be developed in the postdoctoral period will contribute to the field.
Graduate Students
In the group, postgraduate research takes the form of a research program, in other words, dissertations and theses are developed as a series of studies on a specific problem. These studies are produced in the form of scientific articles (mainly) and book chapters.
For a master’s degree, candidates are expected to propose between two and three studies for their research program, addressing different elements of their problem. For the doctorate, 3 to 6 studies are expected to compose the thesis to be defended.
The proposed studies should have different scopes, such as a theoretical review, a psychometric study, a field study, and a model test. There may be more than one study with a similar design in the proposal (for example, two psychometric studies), but they must always include empirical and field research. Studies that encompass the development of explanatory models (especially in the master’s degree), their testing and eventual application (especially in the doctorate) are desired.
Undergraduate Research Programs
A entrada para iniciação científica no GEPPS/UFS é orientada pela oferta anual de vagas pela UFS. Com base no projeto proposto para o ano em questão, o aluno deverá elaborar um artigo científico sob supervisão do professor André Faro e uma doutoranda.
